Dr. Daryl Davis

Dr. Daryl Davis is an international recording artist, actor, acclaimed author, and one of the most singularly courageous voices in the modern fight against racism. With a storied career that bridges music, stage, screen, and sociopolitical engagement, Daryl is as unforgettable for his piano mastery as he is for his daring conversations with members of hate groups.

Musician & Entertainer

Born in the electric blues capital of Chicago, Illinois, and now based near Washington, D.C., Daryl Davis is a musical force rooted in the American tradition. A Jazz trained pianist and graduate of Howard University’s world-renowned Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Daryl has spent his life studying, preserving, and evolving the legacy of Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, and Boogie Woogie piano.

He has toured all 50 U.S. states and performed across the globe with icons including Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, The Platters, The Drifters, The Coasters, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), and Percy Sledge. He held the coveted piano chair in The Legendary Blues Band (formerly the Muddy Waters Band), as well as for Chuck Berry—positions once held by the legendary Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson, both of whom recognized Daryl as their musical godson.

Daryl leads his own critically acclaimed ensemble, The Daryl Davis Band, and has recorded albums including American Roots, Alternate Routes, and Greatest Hits. He was the featured pianist on the Grammy-nominated Flip, Flop & Fly by Cephas & Wiggins, and has composed music for various projects, including the children's story Abigail.

Actor & Performer

On stage, Daryl has captivated audiences with powerful performances in acclaimed productions such as The Time of Your Life, starring alongside Marcia Gay Harden and Richard Bauer, and Polk County by Zora Neale Hurston. He also garnered critical acclaim in Elvis Mania, which enjoyed an extended run in New York City.

His screen work includes appearances in award-winning film and television, most notably HBO’s The Wire, where his presence added authenticity and gravitas.

Author, Lecturer & Race Relations Expert

As a race relations expert, Daryl Davis has put his life on the line to explore some of the most difficult and dangerous terrains in American society. He is the first Black author to write a book on the Ku Klux Klan based on personal interviews and direct engagement. His groundbreaking books, Klan-Destine Relationships, and The Klan Whisper chronicle his encounters with KKK members, and other White supremacists, many of whom ultimately renounced their beliefs after knowing him.

His award-winning documentary, Accidental Courtesy, brings these remarkable stories to the screen, showcasing a man who builds bridges in places where others see only chasms.

Daryl’s methodology—based on respect, dialogue, and empathy—has led to over 200 individuals leaving White supremacist groups, often giving him their robes and hoods as symbols of their transformation. Though controversial to some, his success in dismantling hate with humanity has earned him accolades from CNN, NBC, NPR, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, and Good Morning America.

He is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors, including:

The Elliott-Black Award

The Bridge Builder Award

Recognition from the American Ethical Union and Washington Ethical Society
